Milius – Review

One Room With A View

Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola and other living legends lend amusing anecdotes on this controversial figure and his self-constructed mythos.

Sadly, a stroke has left Milius with a severe speech impediment, so for much of the film we rely on archive interviews with the man himself, lending dramatic weight to the moving sequences with Milius today as he struggles with his disability.

The film finds a surprising flaw in its use of film clips; despite the co-operation of a host of Hollywood legends, the sequences are low-grade and pixelated compared to the sharp clarity of the interviews.

Interesting and at times revealing, Milius is ultimately a celebration when it could have been an insightful critique. Nevertheless, it sheds light on an oft-forgotten and/or maligned figure still desperately trying to create with an inspiring persistence.
