Make way for a new Middle East and North Africa film distribution-exhibition powerhouse with close Hollywood ties and plex muscle to flex.
Majid Al Futtaim’s rapidly expanding VOX Cinemas chain has joined forces with Joseph Samaan’s Tanweer Group, the MENA and Southeast Asia distributor that acts as an agent for TV sales to Disney, Lakeshore, Miramax and other Hollywood companies, to form Tanweer MAF Pictures, known as TM Pictures.
The Dubai-based joint venture will be managed by an independent team of executives. Both companies will invest in acquisitions.
The deep-pocketed VOX operates 83 state-of-the-art screens in eight locations in the UAE and Lebanon, accounting for 37% of the Middle East market. It plans to open 25 screens in 2013 in the UAE and Oman and by 2017 to be operating 300 screens in seven countries across MENA, including Egypt, Bahrain and Qatar.
